Route Formentera Levante

Ibiza – Espalmador Island –Formentera East Coast– Ibiza

This route is designed for days when the predominant wind comes from the west, making the eastern side of Formentera the ideal spot for anchoring.

Before setting sail, let’s take a quick look at Formentera’s stunning east coast.

Right after passing the island of Espalmador, you’ll come across Levante Beach, the counterpart to the famous Illetas Beach, stretching all the way to Sa Roqueta Beach. From here, the Es Pujols area begins, leading up to the iconic Chez Gerdi restaurant. Beyond this point, the coastline transforms into dramatic cliffs, spanning Punta Prima and reaching Es Caló—a stretch that runs parallel to  Levante Beach until it meets the towering cliffs of Pilar de la Mola. At La Mola Lighthouse, the island’s southern coast officially begins, offering a whole new perspective of Formentera’s wild beauty.

The Levante Route can be tailored to your preferences, offering three options depending on how much fuel you want to use and how much time you’d like to spend sailing: Levante Beach – Es Pujols – Es Caló.

Departing from Ibiza’s port, this route takes you past the historic Dalt Vila, then along the coastline of Figueretas and Playa d’en Bossa before reaching Es Cavallet. From there, the skipper sets a direct course for Espalmador, a true Mediterranean gem.

We’ll anchor along the eastern coast of the island, where we’ll be better sheltered from westerly winds. This side is slightly rockier than the west, but it also has small sandy coves perfect for a swim. The water here is simply breathtaking—crystal-clear, shimmering in shades of turquoise.

Levante Beach

Route Formentera Levante 2

After our first anchorage at Espalmador, where we’ll enjoy refreshing swims, snorkeling, sunbathing, and perhaps a classic vermouth, we’ll set course for Formentera, Ibiza’s charming sister island.

Our first stop? Levante Beach —the quieter, more serene counterpart to Illetas. Equally expansive but with fewer boats and breathtaking views, it’s well worth stepping ashore to soak in its beauty.

In fact, from Levante Beach, several paths lead directly to Illetas and its famous restaurants. The shortest trails take you to Es Ministre and Juan & Andrea, while reaching El Pirata, Es Molí de Sal, Tiburón, and Beso Beach requires a slightly longer stroll.

If you prefer to stay on Playa de Levante, you’ll find a fantastic restaurant that rivals those of Illetas but with a more relaxed, less crowded atmosphere: Tanga.

This Ibiza – Espalmador – Playa de Levante – Ibiza route typically requires about 1 hour and 30 minutes of engine time, making it an ideal day trip for those looking to balance navigation with relaxation.

Sa Roqueta – Es Pujols

Route Formentera Levante 3

After Levante Beach, the next stop along Formentera’s east coast is Sa Roqueta Beach—a charming 120-meter-long beach with a relaxed vibe. Here, you’ll find Kiosko Vapor Manolito, a laid-back beach bar, and Hostal Sa Roqueta, offering a cozy stay by the sea.

Just behind the sandy coves of Sa Roqueta lies the Estany Pudent, a serene lagoon that adds to the island’s unique landscape. Continuing along the coast, you’ll reach the Es Pujols coves—a rockier, more picturesque area, perfect for snorkeling adventures. Along this stretch, you’ll discover Escullet des Pujols, Illa de ses Parres, and Punta Alta, dotted with charming fishermen’s huts. Further along, Illa des Fonoll Marí, Escull des Polp, and Escull Placita offer spectacular views of Es Pujols village and the scenic coves between Chez Gerdi and the rugged cliffs of Punta Prima.

If you’re arriving in Es Pujols by boat, our top restaurant recommendation is Chez Gerdi. With its stylish, youthful atmosphere, excellent cuisine, and convenient tender service, it’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the island’s vibrant yet laid-back charm.  Not far frome Chez Gerdi you will find Fandango Restaurant, so you have 2 options for lunch in this area.

This Ibiza – Espalmador – Playa de Levante – Sa Roqueta – Es Pujols (Chez Gerdi) – Ibiza route requires an average of 2 hours of engine time, making it a fantastic option for those looking to explore Formentera at a leisurely pace.

Es Caló

Route Formentera Levante 4

This route is an extension from Punta Prima (end of Es Pujols) to the Es Caló restaurant, in the village of Es Caló de Sant Agustí, just before Punta de Ses Pedreres where the Pilar de la Mola begins, a high plateau surrounded by cliffs more than 100 metres above the sea, crowned by the famous Faro de la Mola (Lighthouse). Es Caló is very extensive, almost twice the size of Levante, Sa Roqueta and Es Pujols beaches together, and even more rocky, with turquoise water and a very nice bottom for snorkelling. In this area we recommend the Es Caló restaurant. The route from Ibiza sailing along the entire east coast of Formentera to the Es Caló restaurant has an average consumption of 3 hours of motor use, it is a long route.

It is important to make sure that the restaurants chosen to go down for lunch have an active tender service to be able to pick you up from the boat and disembark you on the shore. If not, you will depend on the boat’s dinghy/tender. Not all boats have a dinghy and getting close to the shore depends on the boat’s draught and how safe the bottom is. A sandy bottom is not the same as a rocky bottom, as the boat could hit the hull or propellers and suffer serious damage. In addition, restaurants generally use larger zodiacs with more capacity than the boats’ dinghies, which are usually smaller and more cumbersome for reaching the shore.
